Replant Clarksville will be giving away 100 7-gallon trees to residents of Montgomery County. Each property can receive up to two trees. These trees must be planted in the ground without delay upon delivery.
How big are these trees?
Free trees will come in a planter approximately 7-gallons in size. The trees are typically 8-10 feet tall. Four different species are available. Read about them and choose one with a mature height appropriate to your space.
Who qualifies?
Anyone in Montgomery who lives in a home (owner or renter) that needs a new tree in the front or side yard, visible from the street. Renters must provide a written letter of permission from the homeowner. Part of the purpose of the program is beautification, so the tree planting location must be fully visible from the street and not behind a fence.
How much does it cost?
The tree is free! If you plant it yourself, there is no charge. If you would like Replant Clarksville to do the work, digging the hole and installing the tree, we can do that for $100.
When and how will I get my tree?
We’ll bring the tree to you. Ideal planting time for trees in Clarksville is November or later. We’ll be distributing trees in November (with possible adjustments for weather). We’ll coordinate with you for an exact delivery date on a weekend.
What are my responsibilities?

- Call 811 Utility Locate Request before October 30 to request marking of utility lines on your property.
- This service is free of charge and helps avoid expensive or dangerous outcomes when you or someone else hits an underground utility line during digging. Additionally, you are responsible for identifying underground lines not marked by 811. Renters should talk to the property owner for information.
- Do you rent your home?
- Get a signed letter from the owner of the property that agrees to the planting of the tree in the location you have selected.
- Dig the hole(s) before the assigned delivery date.
- Replant Clarksville will deliver your tree to your yard and will contact with specific details as the date approaches. One hole for each tree must be pre-dug at time of delivery.
- WATER WEEKLY. Consistent, deep watering during the first two summers is the single most important factor in tree survival. Give each tree individually a deep watering in weeks when it does not rain, especially during hot weather. A sprinkler is not enough.
Choose your tree(s)
Each property may receive up to two trees. They may be the same or different species. Choose from the species below. You will indicate your choice(s) on your application.
Shumard Oak
Size at Maturity: Large, up to 60 feet high and 40 feet wide
Light Conditions: Full sun
Soil Conditions: Dry to moist soil
Shumard Oak is an attractive tree with a pyramidal crown when young, becoming rounder with age. Once established, it is tolerant of drought, short-term flooding and wind. Adaptable to many soil types.
Shumard Oak is relatively fast growing and disease resistant. It has deep green foliage turning to dramatic, variable colors in the fall. Turkeys, deer and small animals enjoy the acorns. It is a host plant to many species of native butterflies.
Red Maple
Size at Maturity: Large, 50 feet tall and 30- to 50-feet wide
Sun: Full sun
Soil: Medium to wet soils
Red maple offers graceful summer shade and beautfiful fall color. Shallow roots at the base can make growing plants around the trunk difficult. Avoid planting too close to sidewalks and driveways. Fruits of maples, called samaras, spin to the ground as they fall.
Eastern Redbud
Mature Height: Small, 20 to 30 feet tall
Sun: Full to partial sun (4 or more hours of light daily)
Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained soil but accepts clay.
Beautiful flowers in early spring. Once established, moderately tolerant of drought.
Flowering Dogwood (white)
Height at Maturity: 20-30 feet
Sun: Best in a spot that receives morning sun and afternoon shade
Soil: Prefers well-drained soil rich in organic matter
A classic understory tree, the flowering dogwood thrives in partial shade of larger trees. Sensitive to prolonged drought and heat waves in open, sunny locations.
