The CMCSS campuses of West Creek and Kirkwood will together receive 116 new trees from Replant Clarksville this fall. This follows last week’s announcement of plantings at four elementary schools, bringing next year’s total to more than 300 trees.
Some of the tree species to be planted include:
- Redbud – showy pink flowers in early spring
- White Oak –keystone species with high ecological value
- Red Maple – brilliant fall foliage
- Bald Cypress – deciduous conifer that drops its needles in winter
CMCSS and Replant Clarksville worked together to select school campuses that were in special need of trees.
Benefits of School Trees
The plantings will add shade to sidewalks and provide a range of environmental benefits:
- Reduced flooding in parking lots and roads near schools
- Cleaner air – Tree leaves and bark collect particles and reduce pollution
- Summer cooling – shade and evaporation from leaves reduces the surrounding temperature
Tree Selection and Care
Each site’s trees were chosen using the “right tree, right place” approach, considering mature size, canopy shape, soil, sunlight, and resistance to local pests and disease. All are native species that support pollinators and provide ecological benefit.
The trees will range from 8- to 12-feet tall at planting and will be professionally installed. Replant Clarksville volunteers will water and monitor them for the first two years.
Get Involved
Community members can volunteer or contribute to the project. Every tree planted helps restore Clarksville’s canopy and connects students with nature.
